No-Gi vs GI BJJ — Which Should You Train at LOBO BJJ?

When people enquire at LOBO BJJ this question comes up a lot — especially from people who've done a bit of research online and seen both options mentioned. So here's a straight answer with no agenda.

What's the Difference?

GI training uses the traditional BJJ uniform — the kimono. You use the collar, lapels and sleeves as grips, which opens up a whole range of chokes and controls that don't exist in No-Gi.

No-Gi training is done in shorts and a rash guard. Without the GI grips, the game is faster. You rely more on body locks, underhooks and leg entanglements.

Both are BJJ. Both make you better. They're different tools.

Why I Recommend Beginners Start With GI

The GI slows things down. When you're new and everything is happening too fast to process, that slower pace gives you time to think and learn. The grips give you something to hold onto — literally and conceptually. The techniques are more distinct and easier to understand as a beginner.

Fundamentals learned in the GI transfer to No-Gi. The reverse isn't always true. Starting in GI gives you a broader base.

Why Experienced Grapplers Train Both

If you only train GI, you become dependent on grips that don't exist when someone's in a t-shirt. If you only train No-Gi, you miss a whole dimension of the game. The best grapplers train both and understand how each informs the other.

At LOBO BJJ the timetable covers both throughout the week. Most of our members train GI and No-Gi sessions. Once you're through the beginners stage it's worth doing the same.

What About MMA or Wrestling Background?

If you come from a wrestling or MMA background, No-Gi will feel more natural to start with. The movements and body positioning are more familiar. That's fine — start where you're comfortable and add GI later.

The Honest Answer

If you're a complete beginner with no grappling background — start GI. Come to the Fundamentals sessions, get the basics locked in, then start adding No-Gi sessions after a few months.

If you already have some grappling experience — come to both from the start and see which one you enjoy more. Most people end up loving both for different reasons.
