Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Martial Arts in Cumbria — Why LOBO BJJ Leads the Way

If you've searched for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or martial arts in Cumbria, you've probably noticed there's no shortage of options. But not every academy is built the same way — and if you're a parent looking for the right gym for your child, or an adult ready to start training seriously, the difference matters.

At LOBO BJJ in Barrow-in-Furness, we've spent the last eight years building something a little different: a full-time academy with serious coaching pedigree, a genuine competitive team, and a culture that makes complete beginners feel at home from day one.

What Separates Serious BJJ Coaching From the Rest

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a technical sport. The quality of your coaching directly shapes how quickly you improve, how safely you train, and how far you can go if competition interests you. Two things matter most: the belt and experience of your head coach, and whether that coach is still active on the competition mats themselves.

Head coach Mike Reay is a Black Belt under Professor Paul Hartley of LM BJJ, and he's still actively competing at international level — including medal-winning performances at IBJJF European events. That's not a credential from years ago gathering dust. It's current, ongoing proof that the coaching at LOBO BJJ is tested at the highest levels of the sport, not just taught from a textbook.

A Full Timetable Built Around Real Progress

LOBO BJJ runs over 20 classes a week across GI, No-Gi, kids, and beginners programmes. That volume matters — it means students can train consistently, at times that fit their week, without hitting a ceiling on how quickly they can progress.

For adults, the pathway starts with a dedicated Beginners Course, then flows into our 16-Week Fundamentals programme — a continuous, rolling class structure that means new students can jump in at any point in the year rather than waiting for the next intake.

For kids aged 7 and up, our classes focus on confidence, discipline, and anti-bullying skills, taught in a safe, structured, and genuinely fun environment. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is grappling-based — there's no striking involved — which is exactly why so many parents in Barrow and across Furness choose it over other martial arts for their children.

A Competitive Team With Results to Show For It

Competition isn't a side note at LOBO BJJ — it's part of the culture. Students who want to test themselves have a clear path to do so, supported by a head coach who competes himself and understands what that preparation actually requires. That's reflected in the medals our students have brought home from events across the UK and Europe.

Not Just for Competitors

None of this means LOBO BJJ is only for people chasing medals. The academy was built on the belief that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for everyone — whether your goal is fitness, confidence, stress relief, self-defence, or simply trying something new in a welcoming environment. Complete beginners make up a huge share of who walks through our doors, and our Beginners Course exists specifically to make that first step easy.
